Not so many friends in Lowe places…

Well, it was going to happen eventually.  The Mets had won 7 in a row and eventually, statistics catch up to you.  It also didn’t help that Derek Lowe pitched an amazing game.  It was a 1-1 game going into the 7th inning.  Santana did not have his best stuff, but gutted it out and kept the Mets in the game.  He ended up going 6 1/3, 7 hits, 2 runs (0 earned), 1 BB, and 6 Ks.  Unfortunately, Lowe had a little better defense…and some better help from his bullpen.  With 2 outs in the top of the 7th and runners on 1st and 2nd in a 1-1 game, Jerry Manuel took out Bobby Parnell to go to Pedro Feliciano to face lefty Brian McCann.  I am actually ok with that move.  Go lefty-lefty.  Pedro gets the ground ball and Reyes can’t field it.  So, bases loaded for Matt Diaz, who tears up left-handers.  Now, with going lefty-lefty, you would think Manuel would go with the warmed up, right-handed Stokes in the bullpen.  No.  He’s going to leave in Feliciano.  Diaz rips a single, scoring 2.  Then, Anderson rips another, scoring 2 more.  Finally, Manuel takes out Feliciano…but too late.  So, Santana will get the loss, but, in my opinion, the loss can go to Feliciano/Manuel/Mets atroscious defense.  Santana comes into the game with an ERA just over 1.  He leaves the game with an ERA under 1…but loses the game.  Sigh.  Well, I still hate the Braves, but I’m not overly upset about this one, despite it being a close/winnable game for a while.  But with what Lowe did tonight…you have to tip your hat and try to win the next one.

Hits and Misses:

  • In Santana’s 7 total starts, the Mets have scored 15 total runs in those entire games…
  • After scoring 7, 7, 10, and 8 runs in the past 4 games, the Mets scrounge up 3 today.  Again, the statistics will catch up to you…but, in the game before those 4, the Mets scored 1. Ironically, that was Santana’s last start.
  • Not a great day for Reyes…0 for 3 with a key error…
  • Derek Lowe got 1 ground ball double play all year…in the 1st 3 innings, he got 2 more…
  • Carlos Delgado and Chipper Jones each sat out Monday’s game because of nagging injuries…

Tuesday, 7:10, Citi Field, Jurrjens vs. Pelfrey…

A Bullpen Mess…and an “Automatic” move that went “Manuel”…

mess.jpgSo, I guess it was going to happen at some point (bullpen).  I saw most of yesterday’s game…but none of today’s.  I read some of the boxscores and got text updates.  Ok…here goes:

Last Night

Well, Livan pitched well.  Ah…well enough to keep us in it into the 6th.  I will take that from our 5th starter.  Jorge Cantu just got sickly hot and wreaked a lot of havoc on everyone.  Sean Green just looked terrible.  He was behind hitters all night.  And threw Cantu a fat pitch that went too far.  That’s his second pretty bad outing in the last week.  I would not be surprised to see his 7th inning spot go to Bobby Parnell.  Parnell got himself into trouble, as well, but clamly pitched out of it to preserve the lead.  The offense, again, looked strong early on, but failed to do much later in the game.  They really are going to need to get runs in when possible, b/c they are not blowing teams out at all (other than a game or 2).

Wednesday Afternoon:

Ok, I missed this game because of work, but I got texts and heard about it.  As tough as it was Tuesday night, I  deal with that.  Sometimes, a reliever just has a bad night and that’s it.  But, AFTER one of those game, people need to take care of business.  Especially at home.  And after a loss.  And when you are playing a tough division team.  The Mets, as a team, are playing soft.  They don’t have that Phillies “Never Say Die” Attitude.  It’s like watching and emotional teenage girl.  So, Santana pitched another great game.  Going 7 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, walking 3, but striking out 7.  They are money games that need to be in the bag.  I know the rotation has looked better this last time through, but I’m not holding my breath.  And when your ace gives you that and you “Putz” it up…it just gets unacceptable.  BUT…despite ALL of that…I have one more rant.  In the bottom of the 9th, down by 1, Sheff and Beltran get walks.  So, 1st and 2nd, nobody out for Wright.  Now, normally, have him swing away.  But…he’s not quite “Wright.”  (pun intended)  THIS SCREAMS BUNT SITUATION!!!!  Why would you not?  2nd and 3rd, one out?  They’d have to walk Church and then you have 2 chances to win and 1 chance to get it done WITHOUT a hit!!!!  Instead, Wright Ks (on 3 pitches) and then it goes downhill.  Church grounds out, Tatis is hit, and Santos pops out.   The Marlins were giving the game away…I just don’t know what to say, anymore.  File this under a stupid loss that you can excuse and blame away, but not only did the players lose it on the field…it was lost in the dugout.  I’m glad they are off tomorrow…I need a day off…

Frustrated Grunts:

  • File this under a “Santana Win that Wasn’t”…let the official count be at 1
  • I tried to watch some of “Seventh Heaven” Tuesday night…Game 7 between the Caps and Rangers…props to Fedorov for his GWG…great game!  Go Caps!  But, no channel in the US would show the ‘Canes/Devils?  WTF?  Too bad about that game…Marty Brodeur giving up 2 goals in 80 seconds to lose Game 7 in Jersey?  Not good…
  • Too bad for CP3…love you, man!  I was rooting for you, but the Nuggets are good.  Bring it again, next year!!
  • 1 for 11 with RISP?  14 LOB? (shoots self in face)
  •  Fernando Tatis is responding to more playing time: Today, 3 for 4, RBI, 2 runs…

No game tomorrow…Friday in Philly…Pelfrey vs. Park…7:05…unfortunately, I will miss that game, as I have my Master’s Graduation Ceremony!  Go Blue!!
